Yet another privileged opportunity to work with veterinarians working in complex and difficult environments with few resources and to learn about their specific challenges and exchange knowledge. Working for the African Union-Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), Angus Cameron and Cate Mackenzie trained approximately 90 vets in risk-based surveillance. They ran courses for two solid months, working in 2 languages in 4 locations in Africa: Naivasha, Kenya; Kigali, Rwanda; Bamako, Maki; and Cotonou, Benin. The participants and trainers all made many new friends and strengthened networks for collaboration.
As a result of discussions with participants in these courses, Angus wrote a manual of basic animal disease surveillance for countries with few trained veterinarians but with para-veterinary staff responsible for animal disease surveillance. Angus Cameron (2012) Manual of Basic Animal Disease Surveillance. African Union−Inter African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), Nairobi Kenya.
