TRANSFORM: Transformational Strategies for Farm Output Risk Management

Overview
TRANSFORM was a large and complex USAID Global Health Security project worth over USD 30 million.
- Conducted by a consortium of 4 private-sector partners, Cargill, Heifer International, Ausvet and the International Poultry Council.
- focussed in 4 countries, Kenya, India, Vietnam and Indonesia
- across 4 value-chains, shrimp, poultry, cattle and pork production.
The Global Health Challenge
Containing AMR, zoonoses, and transboundary diseases (TADs)
- By 2050, 10 million people will die from antibiotic-resistant (AMR) infections if we do nothing to manage spread
- Over 70% emerging diseases are zoonotic, originating from animals
- TADs impact economic, trade, and food security e.g., African Swine Fever estimated to have cost China and neighbouring countries between $55-$130 billion USD since 2018*
Long-term project goals
- Strengthen global health security by improving animal health to reduce:
- Increase preparedness for new emerging threats
- Prevent transboundary diseases (TADs)
- Manage zoonoses in the food chain
- Mitigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
- Support increased access to safe, affordable, high-quality animal-sourced nutrition

DECISION SUPPORT TOOLS
The whole EpiMundi team was involved in the the data component of TRANSFORM which focused on animal health data collection, analysis, and its application to support better health decisions.
We developed decision support tools across the value chain to increase public and private stakeholders’ capacities to:
- Increase preparedness for new emerging threats
- Prevent transboundary diseases (TADs)
- Manage zoonoses in the food chain
- Mitigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
Project Objectives
- Disease risk mitigation
- Zoonoses, transboundary animal diseases, antimicrobial resistance
- Market-driven solutions
